whimsical window displays

3 cheers for spring!

March 5, 2012

There are many times when I’m not so sure how a display window idea is going to turn out.  I wanted to make some tissue pom poms & work them into a flower theme… however after making my first few, I was inspired to turn it into a cheer leading theme.

I can’t think of a better thing to cheer for… although maybe I’m a bit biased since my name is April ;-)

I will say these fluffy flowers are a lot of bang for your buck.  I got this multi-color pack of tissue for 6 bucks & it made all of the flowers in my window.  I would recommend using a higher grade tissue as it’s not prone to rip as easily when pulling apart the petals.

Want to make your own colorful garden?  You don’t need a green thumb, just some scissors, wire & tissue.

For our second window I was inspired by the latest Ruche look book…  I just turned up the color on our kites.

Now we just need 55+ degree days, sunny skies & daffodils popping up to say hello.  Let’s hear it for S-P-R-I-N-G!

all dressed up for valentine’s day

I had so much fun putting together the Christmas window displays with Tessa, I asked her to work her magic for Valentine’s day.  So with some tissue paper, a stapler & tape she crafted up these fabulous frocks.

And the finished scene….

Wishing you a mailbox full of fantastic valentines from friends & family this February 14th!

coffee filter snowflake scene

November 18, 2011
By

I get inspiration for my store windows from many things, people & places… one of them being Anthropologie.  I blogged about these amazing windows I saw in New York in the summer of 2008.

The thing I love about Anthropologie is they always use common things like cups, books, bags, plastic bottles, cupcake liners… and turn them into amazing art installations.  Unfortunately I don’t have a team of artists on call to implement such grand displays, however I do try to put my own simple spin on things… so here are my cupcake liner/coffee filter strings of snowflakes.

I picked up a couple different sizes of coffee filters & cupcake liners.  I love the idea of cutting the coffee filters into more interesting circular shapes for added interest, but since I’m one gal making  10+ strings of these I passed on that detail.  Now the fun part – stack your shapes & styles of snowflakes…

Note… curling ribbon melts when placed on very hot glue so wait a few seconds to let it cool before applying ribbon or use a different kind of ribbon/string that won’t melt with heat.

Since our store windows are rather tall, I made these pretties 7-8 feet long.  I also chose not to flatten some of the liners & filters for varying looks.

When they are hung in groups, they really have a whimsical flair which makes them a perfect window display for our fun-lovin’ store… “walkin’ in a whimsical winter wonderland”

paper dolls & pretty windows

November 16, 2011
By

I have to say part of the inspiration for our holiday windows this year came from an art exhibition Tessa was invited to model for this past September.  The artist behind Paper Dolls is Matthew Richmond of Ferndale & he transforms yesterday’s news into amazing dresses of all kinds.

I employed the whole fam to help me get all the goods ready to dress the windows ~in case you ever wondered what we do for fun on a Thursday night  (…too bad Gus doesn’t have opposable thumbs otherwise he’d also be making oodles of garlands)

Now that we had all our decorations made, I asked Tessa to create her own ‘paper doll’ dress with our tissue & wrapping paper.

I made one too…

And after we squeezed everybody in….

Ta-dah!  Two gals that really know how to make Christmas merry & bright.

I love “I like you”

I love discovering artsy shops in far away towns… seeing their local offerings, how they display goods, the general vibe of the store and more.  So when I stepped into I Like You in downtown Minneapolis a giant smile appeared on my face because they got an A+ in all of the above.

This space used to be an old recording studio but after some love, care and astro-turf Sarah & her partner turned it into an eclectic collection of handmade goodies from the state of Minnesota

Michelle & I bumped into Sarah twice during our stay in the twin cities… first at Junk Bonanza & then at the Creative Connection.

When we found out she had a store nearby, we knew immediately  where we were going on our free day in the city.

Let me give you a tour…

And all her super clever & kitschy displays…

These tiered displays take the cake… especially with the cute creatures inside the glasses!

Between going to loads of art fairs and the two biggest gift shows in the states, I see a lot of stuff… so when I find fresh & fun treasures like these, it makes my day.

Even their back room & kids corner is full of personality.

Sarah said all of the back room goods were from the Minnesota State Fair where they set up a temporary shop… now this sounds like a fair I might need to visit sometime soon.

There’s no question… I like LOVE this endearing shop.  Thank you Sarah for being such an inspiration to a fellow shop owner.

karla’s place motto: love & do what you like

September 3, 2011
By

After soaking in the sun at South Haven for 5 days, we made a quick stop in Holland on the way back to Detroit. This town has some of the cutest shops around including the oh-so-sweet Karla’s Place.  You know a shop is going to be lovely when you see this motto behind their checkout.

5

In Karla’s words… “I can’t describe myself as a mountain climbing, bungee-jumpin’ kind of gal, but I would describe myself as adventuresome. I have found the biggest adventure is to live the life of my dreams. I encourage others to consider, ‘If failure wasn’t an option, what would I do?’ It’s amazing what you can learn about yourself when doing what you really, really, really want to do. Creating Karla’s Place has been a great experience allowing me to learn each day, show my creativity, listen to others’ stories, and encourage others to be fearless. It’s not what you ‘do’ or the title that defines you, but what you are ‘doing’ in your community and in your own life that makes for an exceptional life.”

No doubt that Karla is a artsy girly-girl with a vintage flair.  Her display style is dynamite & her collection of goodies (many of them handmade) are hard to resist.  I picked up a recycled t-shirt flower head band that I’ve already worn a handful of times :-)
