really cute retro pets

October 18, 2011
By

Meet Krista Brooks & her toy poodle, Little Debbie of Santa Fe New Mexico.  She is the savvy artist behind Retro Pets.

Having a passion for all things vintage, while working on her graphic design BFA, she would skip lunch to visit the bookstore and pick up works on vintage design collections. These books opened a new world to her, as she fell for the opulent cigar labels, elegant art deco posters, and whimsical matchbook covers of early 20th century design.

When she moved to New Mexico in 1995, while standing in her bare apartment, she was inspired to make her first retro paintings. “I pored through my books and found the images I loved best, then painted them large, on masonite or old wood and antiqued them.” Soon after, her friend Jason approached her with the idea of painting his Jack Russell terrier, Fergus. “I figured why not do it as a beer label, Flying Fergus Pale Ale – Good Dog Good Beer, with his little dog leaping through the center?” This became her first Retro Pets design, and in 1998 sparked the idea to take commissions for vintage pet paintings.

Krista took her fledgling new business to the Santa Fe Tesuque Flea Market (which is really more of an art market) selling both commissioned paintings and the first Retro Pets art prints for the next two years. Then in 2000, she began selling her prints to gift stores, growing over the next decade to the more than 350 which now market her work… including catching fireflies.

We carry a handful of her breeds online, however you can place a special order from a whole library of breeds at our Rochester & Berkley locations.  No doubt these clever prints would make any dog lover grin.

favorite new ann arbor artist

July 25, 2011
By

Steve & I managed to squeeze a few hours of touring through all the talent at the Ann Arbor Art Fair last Friday and Julie Beyer was one of our favorites!

Bike2

She only had originals and they were fairly large so we didn’t end up going home with one… but they have been on my mind so I had to share them with you :-)

Chairs
Her art is fairly textured & she incorporates fabric & other images within the paintings too.

Just simply delightful!

introducing poetry posies

July 5, 2011
By

I’ve been a little lacking in the blog world lately due to a number of reasons (including the oh-so-addictiong site, pinterest… more on that later) — but I’ve also been spending some extra time putting together my summer release of designs for a.i. paper.

Crop shot

These fanciful flowers are so fresh, they won’t be available at catching fireflies until August, but I couldn’t resist giving you a sneak peak.

With over seven layers of wood, paper, wire, ribbon & findings, these posies really pop with prettiness. Each flower looks lovely on it’s own, however when they are grouped in larger quantities, they really make a spectacular statement.

Poetry posies

I’ve started by introducing ten different designs and two different color stories… berry declicious & cool cottage.  This makes it easy for putting together a grouping that looks great.

Backs
And this is why they’re called poetry posies.  An nice little surprise to find on the back of these beauties.

Crop shot dek

I think these flowers make a fun addition to our current mix of handmade paper goodies.  How about you?

pewter pets & peas in a pod

Meet Lori Strickland of Tallahassee, Florida.  She is the clever creator behind sterling silver jewlery & pewter pets that tell a story.

Natural themes with a contemporary twist give Lori’s art wares a very distinctive look.  The inspiration comes from the faith and spirit that her Grandmother embodied.  As a child she learned through her that creating things nurtures your soul, connects you to God,  the creator, and brings joy to others. Because her grandmother, she name her company, Lucina K, after her in a tribute to the creativity she lived.

Lucina4
Each of Lori’s pieces begin by making a small sculpture in wax.  Using the ancient method of lost wax casting, the pieces are faithfully reproduced to the finest of detail; bringing to life the wax sculpture in the brilliance of Silver, the metal of the ages, or in tarnish free pewter.

“Bottle Cap turtles.  Turtles may be slow but they always finish first.  Magnetic top to change his shell to your favorite brand. Desk Pets require no food, little attention and hate to walk.”

Lucina1
Lori’s story about the firefly jewely….

The Lights flash on and off Inviting you to chase the
brief Flicker-to possess that *Spark*.
Like Creativity sparking to the surface-an Idea
Like a Consuming Desire inviting pursuit-Love.
Like a Picture bright as the future-Dreams.
Let us chase, as Children, after the Fireflies in our Life

And have you ever said… “We’re two peas in a pod?”  Great for sisters, friends & moms!

Lucina3
“Go Fetch – now if I could only teach him to use the cork puller…”  Replace the cork with one of your own and place this cute canine on your desk. His happy smile soothe you and remind you that the day will end soon.

gotta bottle freaker?

December 6, 2010
By

Zach6
Meet Zachery of North Carolina.  He is the creative talent behind these oh-so-stylish & pretty practical bottle freakers.

What are bottle freakers exactly you may ask?

Zach5
LACED WITH SPANDEX, this little Freaker has the ability to stretch and conform to any beverage container!! While insulating the BEVERAGE and keeping your hands WARM and DRY

Zach4
In fact…BottleFreakers fit all of these – nalgeen, canteen, coffee cup, beer bottle, wine glass, waterbottle, baby bottle, arm, leg, foot, winebottle, 40 oz., gatorade bottle, soda can, big gulp, solo cup, champagne bottle, 2 liter bottle, ball jar, milk jug, juice carton, and many, many more!

Plus they’re machine washable, made in the USA & Zachery has a pretty entertaining story to boot…

Zach1

Prior to inventing bottle freakers, he traveled around the country & lived in this decked out GEO Metro covered in indoor/outdoor carpeting.

Zach2

And after that adventure, he converted an old U-Haul truck to a living room so he could travel & live in it while going to trade shows selling his bottle freakers but unfortunately it broke down. So then he went on to Plan B: Couch Surfing – where it sounds just like it is… you crash at someones house instead of a hotel.  There’s a world-wide community of people that do this & a website that connects them all!

In Zachery’s many adventures, he met his wonderful friend and biz partner Zachariah.  With his help, bottle freakers were born & they’re both so happy to bring such a happy product to the world.

So what are you waiting for?  Pick out your favorite pattern, slip it on your preferred drink and before you know it,  you and your beverage will be much cooler;)

We have select bottle freakers online & larger seletions available at our Berkley & Rochester locations.

Sharidixon2

Meet Shari Dixon of Memphis Tennessee.  She is the creative talent behind this gorgeous & affordable nature-inspired jewelry line.

Shari believes that women want to feel beautiful, feminine & strong all at once – so her motifs incorporate natural elements such as flowers & feathers, imortalizing their fragile lives by sealing them in poly resin, perserving the form & adding a spectacular glazing effect.

Sharidixon1

These elements then become a handmade design combined with curious & daring color choices in a multitude of natural materials such as genuine stones, fresh water pearls & interesting fibers, forming whimsical & extremely unique designs of personal adornment.

You can find a lovely assortment of Shari’s work at our Berkley & Rochester locations.

talk about some sassy curls!

September 8, 2010
By

Meet Laura Torchia of St Clair Shores, Michigan.  She is the sassy gal behind these cute clips for little girls curls.  We carry an assortment of her pretties at our Berkley & Rochester locations, plus she also sells her goods through etsy

Laura1

I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions about her crafty business…

What inspired you to start creating cute hair clips & how did you turn it into a business?

My Daughter Olivia was my inspiration for creating my first clippies. I
was buying tons of expensive bows and clippies that were poorly make
and after wearing them a couple times would just fall apart. So i tried
making some myself and i had so much fun doing it that i haven’t really
stopped. I had gone to a Mom 2 Mom sale and saw a woman selling baby
slings that she had handmade herself and thought why cant i do
that….. So in August 2007 Sassy Girls N Curls was born it was a long
process of trial and error to get to where i am today first starting
out selling at Mom 2 Mom sales and craft shows and then on Etsy in
March 2008.

Laura3
What do you most love about the creative process?

I love
experimenting with new fabrics, ribbons….really anything i can get my
hands on. Being a Stay at home mom its a great outlet for me. After
everyone’s asleep I’ll start making something and the next thing you
know i look at the clock and it 1 am. I Love what i do and am happy
that i can contribute to our family while still being able to stay at
home with our daughter.

Laura2
Is there anything that makes your hair clips unique?

I love
working with different textures and colors mixing dots and stripes and
just making cute Clippies. If it turns out to be something cute great
if not i still had fun trying.

I take pride in the fact that my
items are handmade by me so i am able to pay extra attention to every
tiny detail. All of my Bows, Flowers and Posies are hand sewn not just
hot glues together. I make sure all my ends are heat sealed so none of
your ribbon edges will fray over time. I know my customers are going to
walk away with a high quality product that will last. That and superior
customer service keep them coming back.

Thanks Laura for making little girl’s hair-dos even cuter!

vanity plates like no other

Licence plates

Meet Fred & Donna Kostrick.  This young spirited couple have been married over 50 years & spend their extra time transforming old license plates into recycled hip signs.

We had a chance to ask Fred & Donna about their inventive signs…

Frank2

What
inspired you to start creating your art work & how did you turn it into a
business?

We started collecting license plates as a hobby.  We got so many
plates we needed to do something with them.  Then I went shopping for my wife’s
birthday and found a journal made out of plates.  I knew I could make them
much cheaper.  I started with journals and then went on to making signs
& state maps and then decided to make the whole USA.  I started giving
them as gifts.  Most people loved them so I started selling them at the
Warren Farmers Market on Sunday in the summer time.

Frank3

What do
you most love about the creative process?

The favorite part of the creative process is making people smile when
they see the finished product.

Frank1
What makes your artwork unique?

The one thing that makes our products unique is no two are alike and we are
using all recycled material.

You can find all of these signs at our Berkley & Rochester locations & we also offer a few styles online.  They also are happy to do custom work!

So… one reason why I haven’t been blogging as much lately is because of our latest retail adventure, Yellow Door Art Market.  I’m having a blast seeking out new talent on etsy & have found some gems to bring to downtown Berkley this November.

Unfortunately not all artists can commit to selling their wares at Yellow Door, but that won’t stop me from sharing some of my favorite etsy gals who make a living craftin’ in the mitten.
