loops of love

September 16, 2014
By

Many of us know someone who has fought, won or lost the battle of breast cancer.  Our relationships with these women and men connect all of us in a unique way and we want to celebrate that with our Loops of Love campaign this October.

Loops of Love

To honor these amazing people in our lives we are linking together pink paper loops with the names of women and men you know that are fighting or have battled breast cancer. These loops of love will be displayed in all our shops during Breast Cancer Awareness month and we’ll be donating a dollar for every loop to The Pink Fund who provides short-term financial aid to breast cancer patients in active treatment, so they can focus on healing.

loops of love bracelet

In addition to donating dollars for loops, we’ll also be selling these handmade silk heart bracelets at all our locations and online now through the month of October for $5.95 with all proceeds going to The Pink Fund.  They’re the perfect accessory to wear during this month of awareness in celebration of the women and men in our lives who have fought breast cancer.

surprise snail mail

And for some extra fun, we’ll be selecting a number of our nominated names to send surprise snail mail in hopes of making their days brighter this October.

Ready to help us start making long chains of pink paper loops?

1. Email your Loop Love name(s) to service@catchingfireflies.com with subject title: Loops of Love  (please do not leave info in the comments section on this blog post)

2. Include their full name(s) and mailing address(es) if you would like them to be eligible to possibly receive surprise snail mail.  (There will be a note explaining Loops of Love but the surprise pink envelopes will be sent anonymously)

3.  Please let us know if they are currently fighting, have won or lost the battle to breast cancer

4.  Include your full name and your relationship to the nominee.

Thank you for partnering with us to make days brighter this fall!

cupid call love

February 25, 2014

It’s been a couple weeks since we sent out a load of love to deserving souls and I must say we’re tickled pink to hear some of the stories about our surprise packages.  We originally planned on sending 100 packages, but due to the volume of nominees we ended up wrapping up around 180 cupid calls.

We’d like to express our thanks to all the journalists who help spread the word, the nominators for taking the time to share their stories and Kitchen with a Cause , Cellar Door Soap , Seeds of Happiness and Hydra for donating products.  Plus, I can’t leave out our catching fireflies team who read, sorted, typed, wrapped and shipped our boxes of happiness.  You have all played an important part of making this Cupid Campaign a wild success!

Here are some sweet notes of appreciation from some our our surprise smile recipients…

This Cupid Campaign has been an amazing experience for me.  It has opened my eyes to the stories people are living with everyday.  It has opened my heart to be more compassionate and opened my hands to be more giving.

This Valentine’s Day ranks as one of my favorites.  Even though we were essentially giving the gifts… being able to use my talents and resources to bring a little heaven to earth has been one of the best gifts I have received yet.

cupid calling

By

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before but Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite  holidays.  Not because I like roses, fancy restaurants or chocolate (well, I do like chocolate) but because I like to surprise some of my girlfriends by sending them little treats in the mail.  I like to look at February 14th as an opportunity to bring a bit of color and joy into those grey cold days of February… because who doesn’t get a smile on their face when a pretty package arrives on their door step?

cupid call

This year I’ve decided to expand my cupid arrow radius by including friends, family or special people YOU know who could really use a cupid call to cheer them up.  It could be they had a hard holiday season, are dealing with health problems, recently lost someone special or maybe it’s a struggle to keep a smile on their face… just let us know in a short paragraph why you’d like to nominate them to get a box of love delivered to their door step.

cupid call boxes So here’s how it works…

1. Email your submission to service@catchingfireflies.com with subject title: CUPID CALL (please do not leave info in the comments section on this post)

2. Include your nominee’s full name, age and mailing address.  One submission per email please. (there is no age limit for nominees)

3.  In a short paragraph, let us know why they need a cupid call.  Also let us know a little about the person & what they like (bath & body goods, kitchen gadgets, fashion accessories, inspirational items, funny things, etc…)

4.  Include your full name and your relationship to the nominee.

Deadline for entry is February 5

We’re going to do our best to send out as many cupid calls as possible the week of February 9.   You will not know if your nominee was chosen, but if they were, the package of love will be delivered anonymously with a short note reading, “A bit of love wrapped up just for you to make your day brighter.  xoxo ~ cupid”

If you do have additional questions, please ask them in the comments box and we will reply so everyone can see them.

making days brighter for our furry friends

We’re big animal lovers at catching fireflies so in celebration of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, we’re partnering with Michigan Animal Rescue League to raise money & collect supplies for the many dogs and cats in Metro Detroit that need forever homes.

The Michigan Animal Rescue League believes that every animal deserves the highest quality of life. Each and every animal that comes through their door is given unconditional love and regard in the form of physical care, socialization and the day to day joys that an animal would receive in a home.

marl

MARL rescues animals out of desperate situations & gives them consistent, dedicated care and attention in an effort to help them retain or regain their ability to connect with people and enjoy life.  They offer medical care, socialization, training and most of all love and acceptance.  As a result, their animals receive personalized placement, whether that be with an adoptive family, in long term foster care or living as part of the MARL family for an extended period of time.  MARL does not euthanize their animals except when injury, disease or temperament make other options impossible.

We’re invite you to help us make days brighter for our four legged friends a couple different ways.

First, you can help us spread the word that we’re donating a dollar for every new  facebook like we get in the month of October to MARL.   Our goal is to get 1,000 likes so we can write a check for $1,000 that will go to helping MARL continue finding dogs and cats forever homes.

Michigan Animal Rescue League

Our rescued Basset Hound, Gus is already on the job spreading the word.  You can help him out by clicking HERE and sharing this photo on your facebook page.

Second, we’re also collecting supplies at our Berkley, Ann Arbor & Rochester locations all month long.  MARL’s wish list includes: dog food, cat food, cat litter,  dog treats, paper towels and gift cards from Petco, Petsmart or Pet Supplies Plus.

And when you bring some supplies, we’ll even throw in this sweet & oh-s0-true magnet with any purchase.

gus thanks you

celebrating katie & welcoming kerstin

September 17, 2013
By

It was just under a year ago when we first met our Ann Arbor manager, Katie.  We knew she was going to be a great fit for our latest location and an asset to our team.  We also knew she was only going to be with us for a short time since her fiance was finishing his doctorate in physics at U of M… but sadly that time came a little sooner than expected.

katie1

Katie spent her first month with us diving into the crazy Christmas season at our Berkley location.  She soon found out that being a facebook model was part of the gig and happily agreed with a smile.

katie in ann arbor

When January rolled around her job title turned into a full time painter.  Steve & I put in a few days of painting, but the majority of that store was colored by Katie’s handiwork  (even the 80+ window panes!)… and she did an AWESOME job all with a can do attitude.

katie and elliot

Next came the joy of inventorying and creating price labels for thousands of new products for 2 weeks straight.  Our mac-man, Elliot teamed up with her as they entered the land of using our new UPC & label printing program.   A good reason to celebrate at the Best of Detroit Party for sure!

katie and her team

With additional help from our original firefly team, she was ready to invite new Ann Arbor firefly fans into our whimsical world of goodies!

Katie’s awesome attitude, cheerful personality and positive spirit will always be a part of 419 Detroit Street.  We will miss her and wish her all the best in her new adventures out west!

welcome kerstin

Finding a manager that fits well in our firefly team and gets what we are all about is an key component of our success.   Kerstin is that gal and we are thrilled she was ready to make a change to her retail landscape this fall.  She has spent the last 6 years working in a locally owned Ann Arbor clothing boutique and is excited to be transitioning into our whimsical world of gifts.

We’re looking forward to Kerstin continuing to help us shine our light in Kerrytown!

ann arbor location in the spotlight

It’s hard to believe that Steve and I first toured through our Ann Arbor location last year around this time.

We dreamed and envisioned what we could bring to this space to make 419 Detroit Street a shine little brighter…

catching fireflies courtyard

… and I’m happy to say our vision has become a wonderful whimsy-filled reality (fairy bubble factory & all)!

It has been a joy bringing our latest location to life so I was thrilled to find out that we were selected as a finalist for a Retail Excellence Award from Gifts and Decorative Accessories Magazine.  This means catching fireflies will be featured in their August issue and Steve & I get to head to New York for the awards ceremony at the Chelsea Piers next month!

Stay tuned to see if our whimsical world wins the hearts of the judges… and even if it doesn’t we know we’re already winners with our fabulous firefly fans who make what we do possible in the first place :-)

thanks for making our opening grand!

March 26, 2013

They skies may have been grey but it was a sun-shiny day inside our new Ann Arbor shops thanks to our fantastic firefly fans!

ann arbor catching fireflies grand opening

We enjoyed live tunes by talented guys all day long.  Here is a little taste of the day…

One big hit of the day was our live photo booth.  It was fun because even the camera shy could hide behind silly glasses or marvelous mustaches.

live photo booth

Even Steve’s shy mom and sister picked up some props and posed for us!  See all the silly photo booth photos HERE.  Many fans asked if our props were for sale so I put together a few of my simple drawings for you to print at home.

fun free photo booth props

I suggest printing on a light weight card stock.  Then just cut them out and hot glue a thin wooden dowel or kabob skewer to them and your good to go!  It’s a sweet and simple way to add some fun to any party.  Print the photo props HERE.

Thanks again for making our opening day one to remember!  Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces for many years to come!  <3 team catching fireflies

firefly facelift: before and after

March 14, 2013
By

After painting almost everything, re-purposing and tossing out some old display pieces and also bringing in some new… I believe we have achieved the fresh look we were going for at our Berkley store.  Of course one of my favorite parts of those ‘makeover shows’ is the classic before/after shots so here are a few of ours…

22

We kept our crazy mannequins and positioned them so they were spilling out ‘paint’ from a few of our empty cans.  The dresses and ‘paint’ all were created from plastic party tablecloths.  (LOVE the color selection they have of these at Party City)

Berkley Store Facelift

We said goodbye to almost all of our painted pine boards we used for shelves and replaced them with hutches, leaving room for small wall vignettes in between.    And since we loved how the marquee letters SHINE looked at our new Ann Arbor shop, we decided on adding SMILE to Berkley’s store-scape.

We also got rid of all our card holding eaves troughs and moved most of the cards to acrylic spinners.  This allowed room to add a retro vinyl love seat and more crates of cool finds for the guys.

catching fireflies remodel

The big front table and hanging window were replaced by a trio of industrial spools and giant tree budding with pretty paper lanterns.

A wall of doors was also removed from the front area which opened up the space nicely.

catching fireflies store displays

We moved the bath and body section to where the pet goods used to be and opened up our jewelry and accessories section by removing the hutches and windows.  This also allowed room for our cool new candy display.

unique store displays

We re-purposed all the doors that used to be walls and made them self-standing cubes that display anything from handbags, jewelry, books, tiles and more.

diy store displays

The new pet table is where all the a.i. paper goods used to be displayed and our jewelry has moved out of the hutches and onto table tops.

cool store display ideas

By removing a few of our kitchen hutches we created a eye-catching wall-o-crates that display goods & recipe books very nicely.  The baby section also got streamlined a bit.

And of course there is the girly room, check-out, quirky & cool products too… but you’ll just have to come visit us soon to see those sections.  We hope you enjoy our firefly facelift!  Now I need to take a nap or maybe escape to a sunny island for a bit… and then start to think about a small Rochester re-do!

You know us fireflies… always flying forward ;-)  Thanks for following us through our facelift!
