a rochester welcome

We’re excited to introduce the lovely, talented & oh-so-fun Cheryl Jones as our new Rochester manager.

Prior to joining team Catching Fireflies, Cheryl spent 20+ years in the fast-paced ad biz working for the Leo Burnett Agency (formally Darcy).  She loved working with the variety of creative people in advertising but needed a break from the corporate world.

She started her search for a part-time job & the first place she applied was Catching Fireflies in Rochester. Cheryl mentioned, “The first time I walked into that store I fell in love with it so it seemed appropriate to apply for a job there so I could stay connected to creativity and be in a happy atmosphere.”

Unfortunately the Rochester location didn’t have any openings at that time, but our Berkley location did so she ended up joining Danielle’s team & spent 3 years in our whimsical world.

The opening of our sister store, Yellow Door Art Market in the fall of 2010 was perfecting timing to promote Cheryl to a management position.  She led the way with flying colors & has been a big part of Yellow Door’s success story.

Although Cheryl lives in Rochester Hills, she grew up in Birmingham and shared that her mom would always go to Bordine’s to get her flowers. Of course, Cheryl had to tag along and complain about the “day” trip because it was like going out to the country back then!  It’s a different story now that Cheryl has spent the last 15 years calling Rochester home.

We’re looking forward to Cheryl continuing her journey with us as she makes her way back to the location where it all started.

celebrating dena

With a sad, yet happy heart we’d like to celebrate Miss Dena Gillespie as she is moving on to pursue her Dancing Wired & Blissfully Wired business full time.   For the past six years, she has been the heartbeat of our Rochester catching fireflies.

My personal relationship with Dena actually dates back to 1995 when we met working at an after school childcare program in Ann Arbor.  We were the queens of cool craft time with the kids & Dena was the gal who inspired me to start selling goods at local craft shows.

Here we are sharing a booth at the Dixboro – Artisans on the Green show.

As the years passed by our paths continued to cross.  So when we had the opportunity to bring Dena on as the manager for our new Rochester location in 2006, it made perfect sense.  Her humorous personality, artsy eye, caring heart & team player mentality transformed that old train depot into the fun & whimsical shop it is today.

Whether Dena was modeling scarves & sunglasses, coming to work in costume or dressing up for special events, she always had fun with it & inspired her team to join in the festivities.  Many good times & memories were made over the years.

Dena was also active in our charity events & definitely made days brighter for many seniors & kids by delivering loads of valentines.

Lucky for us, she likes to laugh because she’s been in her share of funny holiday videos & silly blog postings throughout the years.

And it’s not a coincidence that Dena celebrated the very first time HOUR Detroit voters named us Best Gift Shop as well as our latest consecutive win this past year.

Thank you Dena for sharing the past six years with us.  Your terrific talents will be dearly missed but you’ll always be part of the catching fireflies story.  We wish you all the best in your next chapter of life.

It’s that time of year again where we like to share some love by giving Valentine cards to the kids at The Children’s Hospital of Michigan.  So we invite you to put your crafty hat on & whip up some sweet sentiments for kids who could use a smile on February 14th.

Here’s a few clever card ideas we found that were TOADally awesome…

Print these quirky cards at Crap I Made

Buy a book of Mad Libs & tear out sheets for these very funny cards ~from Family Fun

Like to play with clay?  How about these salt dough hearts from The Long Thread?

Google eyes always makes things more fun don’t they? ~from Family Fun

Hey matie… aren’t these some grrrreat cards? ~print them at mer mag

Pretty pencil toppers from Alpha Mom

Whooo do you love? ~from Family Fun

Valentine cards from the hardware store?  Who knew paint samples could make such brilliant bookmarks?! ~from Lu Bird Baby

And for those of you who like to color, you can print this cheerful coloring sheet HERE  (if link doesn’t automatically open try hitting the refresh button)

We’ll be collecting and displaying your handcrafted cards at our Berkley & Rochester locations until February 12.  And if you don’t live near by and want to participate, please send your cards to: catching fireflies 3117 W 12 Mile Berkley, MI 48072.

A note from The Children’s Hospital:

When making your cards, please consider not signing the cards so family members and/or staff could personalize the cards themselves and give them to the patients. It means more to the patients to receive a card from someone familiar vs. a stranger. The patients also like to be able to give cards to their family members or the nurses and staff caring for them.

Also if you could avoid messages like “Get Well” or “Feel Better Soon,”  as well as anything with a religious connotation. Some of the patients here, unfortunately, have life long illnesses like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, etc. that they won’t necessarily be “getting well.” We service so many different cultures and religions that we try not to offend any of our patients/customers.

As a thank you for bringing or sending in 3 or more cards, we’ll give you this joyful heart necklace with any purchase to thank you for helping us send smiles to kids who aren’t feeling too well.  We may not be doctors or nurses, but we can still prescribe the best medicine around… LOVE.

Thanks again for helping us spread JOY & LOVE to those in our community!

(for online orders, please mention your participation in this project so we can include the free sign in your shipment.) *1 free necklace per family

Everybody knows that Black Friday is all about big box store sales and Cyber Monday is full of online deals, but did you know there’s a new day that celebrates small businesses?  Saturday, November 26 is the 2nd Annual Small Business Saturday.

mini margarita cupcakes for the misses

May 5, 2011
By

Since Girl’s Night Out fell on Cinco De Mayo this year, we whipped up some themed cupcakes for our sweet snacks.

Margarita cupcake6

I found this tasty recipe via RecipeGirl.com

Yields 24 regular cupcakes or 48 mini cupcakes

CAKE:
9 ounces Margarita Mixer, bottled liquid
3 ounces tequila
1 (18.25 ounce) box white cake mix
3 large egg whites
2 Tablespoons canola oil
1 Tablespoon lime zest

LIME BUTTERCREAM ICING:
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
5 to 6 cups powdered sugar
2 Tablespoons lime juice, freshly squeezed
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon lime zest

Margarita cupcakes 2

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cupcake tins with paper liners.

2. Prepare cupcakes: Whisk together margarita mix & tequila in a small bowl.

3. In a large bowl, blend cake mix, egg whites, vegetable oil, lime zest and 1 1/4 cups of the margarita mix from step 1. Blend on low for about 30 seconds and then increase speed to medium and blend for two additional minutes. Batter will be slightly lumpy.

4. Spoon the batter into cupcake liners (about 3/4 full). Bake for 20-25 min, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cupcakes cool for about 10 minutes in the pans, then remove them to a rack to cool completely. *For mini cupcakes – bake for 16-18 minutes

5. Prepare icing: Once cucpakes are completely cooled, prepare the icing. Place butter in a large bowl and beat with electric mixer until butter is fluffy. Add 5 cups of powdered sugar, salt, lime juice, and lime zest. Mix until thick and creamy. Add more powdered sugar until the frosting is of a good spreading (or piping) consistency. Ice cupcakes in whatever manner you prefer… spreading or piping the frosting.

Margarita cupcake3

I added some green sprinkles, straws & umbrellas to give them a little personality.

Gus & Tuesday intently watched me make these so I coudn’t resist treating them to a little bit of the left over frosting :-)

Margarita cupcake4

And the all the ladies liked them too!

Margarita cupcake5

A perfect treat for Cinco De Mayo, a summer soiree or just because.
