Wow… it's only been a couple weeks and we're thrilled with the fantastic cards that are coming in from our crafty firefly fans!  There's still plenty of time to color, cut & glue a few heart cards for our sweet seniors.

V5

I wouldn't say our basset hound Gus is a sweet senior quite yet… but firefly fan, Mary was kind enough to bring in these hilarious dog Valentine cards plus a heart collar cover for Gus!  He howled with delight because now he's ready to impress all the lady hounds this February.

We can't wait to post more of your crafty cards.  Click HERE for some heart-day clip art and HERE for Valentine coloring sheets.

a positively pink october indeed

I'd like to thank all the women affected by breast cancer who came in for a free pink positivity bracelet last month.  It was an honor to hear some of your stories and we're glad we could play a part in your celebration or give a little light during a trying time.  One of the women brought in this inspiring poem for us to share with you.

Cancer1

We also received two lovely thank you notes from the American Cancer Society and the GM in Motion team from the Strides Against Breast Cancer walk for our donation of over 30 Friends for Life frames.

Cancer3

Cancer2

And another touching story involves the amazing woman who won a Friends for Life frame at The Pink Fund's Fundraiser Luncheon.  She plans on putting this fantastic photo of her and Miss Michigan in the frame.

Cancer4

Here's a little bit about the brave Linda Anger… "I was diagnosed with Stage 3C Endometrial Cancer in early July, and had a
radical hysterectomy on July 21. Several of the 30 lymph nodes removed during
the surgery were cancerous, so I began a regime of chemotherapy 6 weeks post-op.
I had my fourth chemo treatment two days ago (October 27), with two more planned
before the end of the year. Clearly, I will shout "Happy New Year!" from a new
perspective this time!"

Learn more about Linda's journey through her blog.

Thank you again ladies for sharing.  Your inspiring stories and thank-you notes brightened our day.

Food face

I spotted our quirky food face plate in action on the Fly to my Window blog.  Looks like Mr. F got a nice mac-n-cheese hairdo with some grill cheese sideburns.  Thanks Shannon for posting your pictures.

Food

I also found these creepy looking hotdog-spaghetti creations on her blog.  I wonder how you could use these on the face plate…maybe a runny nose – yuck -huh?  They remind me of mutant spiders – which would be fun to serve to the kiddies on Halloween.

If you've got a special story about one of our firefly goodies, we'd love to hear it!  Just drop us a line so we can share your gift giving wisdom with the rest of our whimsical world.

the story of STAKE and SPLIT

December 9, 2008
By

Stakes2I’ve always been a fan of transforming my flower pots into evergreen backdrops for a few fun snow stakes during the holiday season.Stakes1

However, I never thought about secretly surprising a friend with one until I heard the agenda of one of our firefly fans.  Every time she visited us, she left with a handful stakes and out of curiousity we inquired about what she was up to.

Stakes4Turns out she was sneaking up to her friends homes and sticking a festive stake in their yard with no note or trace of her visit.  After hearing some of her stake & split stories… there was no doubt she was having a grand time.

So if you’re feeling a little mischevious or want to play Secret Santa… you know what to do.  Don’t worry we won’t tell.

We have lots of pretty stakes available at our Rochester & Berkley locations.

a smencil story

Smencils3 My friend Amy Peters purchased these very popular scented pencils for her kiddos and raved about their magical inspiration qualities on her blog.Smencils2

"My kids have been going crazy drawing with them!  If they look tired in these pictures it’s because they have been waking up early to finish their pictures…I’m not joking.  To truly understand the gravity of this accomplishment you have to realize that Kyra is usually PULLED out of bed each morning.  I’m not sure how long this creative burst is going to go on for, but it has sure been worth the cost of the Smencils."Smencils1

Thank you Amy for sharing your sweet story with us.  Love the fun art work!

If you’ve got a special story about one of our firefly goodies, we’d love to hear it!  Just drop us a line so we can share your gift giving wisdom with the rest of our whimsical world.

"Catching Fireflies always makes me smile when I walk through the door….it’s the perfect place to pick up that unique gift that the person on the receiving end will never forget. "

Amix Maureen Monte

"Catching Fireflies isn’t a shopping experience, it’s an inspiration experience! Plus, you’ll find things here that you won’t find anywhere else. It helps avoid that embarrassing "Oops! You bought the same gift that I did!" at those baby or wedding showers. Never, ever, EVER buy something for a child or female friend without visiting Catching Fireflies first! "

Nicole

"I love this store! There are always new and exciting gifts that you won’t find at the mall. They support crafty artists from all over and it’s refreshing to see that. I also enjoy the story of how a crafty girl followed her dreams and started a store with fun gift items!"

Sue

"I’ve been shopping at Catching Fireflies since they opened. Any store that can keep me coming back for 8 years must be doing something right!!!!!"

Rochester_after_1 Heather Meloche

"Catching Fireflies is truly a diamond among the stores of downtown Rochester. "

Annette Manwaring

"One of the neatest gift shops ever! This past May when I was having a bummer of a day I found a $63 gift card from catching fireflies in my mailbox! I had won the monthly drawing. It was like winning the lotto I was so happy! Catching Fireflies is truly unique and I just cant visit without finding a "one of a kind" something! "

Roch_d

Ellen Wexler

"Catching Fireflies is like a great work of fine art, photography. You never really see everything there is to see the first time looking. You never tire of gazing, browsing, SHOPPING! as there is always something new and wonderful to discover. On top of the owner’s fanciful, artistic, creative items that she spends countless hours crafting, she is an incredibly generous patron to animal welfare and other causes. And her shopping trips out of town yield heavenly finds for us to buy. A little of everything and then some. I am so happy to be able to brag about this BEST gift shop in Michigan and beyond."

Jan

"They always keep me posted online of specials. Every order comes with a hand-written note and candy! Just great people!"

Grace

"They have the kind of items that make people ask, "where did you get that?" and then they go out and get it too!"

B. Dunn

"I live in Livonia, but I’ll drive to Berkley just for this place, because of the nice selection of things for gifts and for myself that they have. My daughter took me there for a Mothers Day outing and I fell in love w/ the place. I go back often."

Thank you for being such fabulous customers… we couldn’t do it without you.  There should be a contest where we can vote all of you the best!  (I know that sounds super sappy – but it’s true)

keep shining bright

I couldn’t resist sharing a few more submitted stories from our making days brighter contest. (I wasn’t kidding when I said they were all winners) Reading these just warm my heart!

Carolyn Culvey

The gift I most enjoyed giving from catching fireflies was a beautiful turquoise beaded bracelet to my good friend Lynn.  I had just discovered she had bought a new wool turquoise blazer and she loved the bracelet!  You see, Lynn and I do not exchange birthday or holiday gifts; rather we have chosen to bless each other throughout the year with little acts of kindness.

Well, to make a long story short, this past year Lynn ‘out did’ me 2 to 1 in blessing me as my in-laws battled cancer and Alzheimers.  The bracelet will never repay her kindness, but hopefully it will remind us both of our love and friendship for each other.

Fa7Several years ago I received a gift from your store.  I was leaving a job and two of the young teachers in my building gave me a going away present – a wall hanging of a fairy with the message "inspire" because they said that I inspired them.  It was special because of the meaning they gave to it but also because it introduced me to your store.  It still hangs in my kitchen.

Annette Manwaring

I went out to my mailbox yesterday to find several doctor bills that I hadn’t expected to come so quickly.   Along with them there was an envelope from catching fireflies.  I was delighted to find I had won the monthly $63 shopping spree!!   I can’t tell you how it totally made me day!   Just in time for my birthday!  Thanks again.

Roch_iEvery time I visit your store my day gets brighter.  Being an artist myself, my eyes and heart feast on all the creative treasures that greet me as I enter your amazing store.  I cannot single out just one item.  I love browsing thru and examining each and every thing I see (including the doors, lockers etc used as props) marveling at the joy in creativity.  I always buy too much, but I can’t control myself.  When I get home the fun begins again as I unwrap these gifts for me and my loved ones and find the perfect home for them.  They give me pleasure every day.  Thank you for brightening my life. xoxo

Stacey Tardich
I have a dear friend (I’m 39 with three young children, She is 60 with 3 grown children), we meet once a week for dinner and a movie.  I know this is the point of this contest but I really can’t express in words all that she does for me..she keeps me going in this crazy motherhood world.  Anyways, catching fireflies gifts let me express to her how special she is.  They are always unique and special just like her.  Every gift I give her is from your store…angels, crosses, friend tokens, frames, money pots to save money for our movie nights, funny kitchen signs, your metal little signs with hope, joy, grace.  So there is not one gift but all your gifts help me to express how much I appreciate her in my life.  So thank you!

Thank you again for sharing your personal stories with us.  They inspire me and I know they’ll resonate with many of you.

‘making days brighter’ contest winners

Firefly_jar_sIn our spring newsletter we asked our customers to recall a gift they’ve received or given from catching fireflies that made their day or the gift recipient’s day brighter and why.  We enjoyed reading your many wonderful stories and it was very hard to select the ones to feature because you are all winners. (I know that really sounds cheesy, but it’s true!)

With that being said, the following three entries will receive this magical battery operated firefly jar because of their heartfelt submissions.

1. Robin Baker

3ft_double_lg_copyI have purchased many items that have made my day or someone else’s brighter~but the one that stands out most is: A sign that reads "Always Kiss Me Goodnight."  I have this wooden sign hung in our bathroom~which is most people’s last stop before they go to bed (perfect spot).  Every night I read this and it reminds me that no matter what kind of day you’ve had or what kind of mood you may be in~to kiss the people that matter most in your life daily:)

2. Patsy Birdwell

I was in your store with my best friend who stuck by me thru a long illness.  That evening, Joy bought me this incredible book called SHE – pink and orange – so happy and strong.Com04 Oh how blessed I felt.  As we looked through the book, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a book called HOPE (a book about cancer) Being so uplifted by the book, SHE… I knew this was for me and boy was it ever.

Several months later I was in another local gallery and the owner began to share with me of her recent test results showing that she had cancer.  I told her I had something for her and the next time I came in I would be sure to bring it.

Months had passed and I felt such a deep passion to give her my book. By this time I had been so encouraged by it, I was almost sad giving it to her but I knew the hope it gave me could not be kept with me alone.Hope When I handed her the book, her eyes welled up and began to look at it as if there was a passage or page I wanted her to see but I pushed the book away and said "no, it’s for you."  She let me know she was closing the store because she couldn’t keep it up with her health.  She was so blessed and gave me the biggest hug.  We shared our well wishes and said good-bye.  I left with happiness in my heart and a bit of sadness.

The next week when I stopped at catching fireflies, I searched every nook-n-cranny with no luck of finding the book.  Finally with the help of Danielle, the manager, we figured out what book I was looking for and she arranged for copy to be brought over from the Rochester store the following week.  Wow!  What customer service.  I find your store not only upbeat and fresh, but full of life and kindness.  Thank you!

3. Sherry Waines

Bgpe_910_2Hunting for the perfect journal became my mission.  My daughter her husband and two kids were moving to Germany for 2 years.  I wanted to give my daughter a journal that she could keep at her bed side to record their adventure.  It had to hold tickets (plane, train and subway) also tickets to museums and attractions.  Photo’s and postcards, along with her written thoughts.  I searched everywhere, dept. stores, stationery stores, whatever.  Nothing.  Every journal looked ordinary.

Then I went into the Berkley Catching Fireflies and there it was.  Better than I imagined.  Perfect.  Just the right size with a wonderful cover that had a airplane charm and different stickers and such to make it look like a travel journal.  Well she loved it too and started writing about their move before they even left for Germany on April 26th 2007.   Thank you Catching Fireflies.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughtful stories with us.  It fills my heart with joy knowing that we are part of making your days brighter and also inspires us to keep on shining.

(unfortunately, the first and last items shown are no longer available for purchase)

valentine surprise

By

Michelle_excitedThis is my dear friend Michelle Allen.  She lives in Washington but it feels like she’s my next door neighbor between all the emails and blog postings we share.

She was one of the lovely ladies who I sent some valentine goodies to recently and I had to laugh out loud when I saw this silly post on her blog.  What a sweetie.

I love when our customers send us photos or stories about gifts they received or memorable experiences they’ve had at catching fireflies.  Here’s one that warmed my heart.

"I just wanted to let you know I really love your store and website!  Everything is so creative and I can always count on a visit bringing a smile to my face.  My husband also loves browsing your store, which is not always the case in stores I like to go to.

A while ago I purchased an a.i. paper design  recipe stand and lucky me a recipe for Sloppy Joes came with and I just so happened to have some ground beef defrosted and I didn’t know what I was making for dinner.  So I used my new recipe and we loved it!"

A big fan,
